The Scottish highlands are a place I’ve longed to visit for many years. I’ve been to Edinburgh several times (I love that city) but I’ve always wanted to see the wilds of the mountains and lochs. Despite the dramatic changes in weather over the course of two full days (we drove up through Glencoe in misty but fairly dry weather and drove out of it in heavy snow) I was in complete awe over everything. May have even cried a little because I was just so happy to be there.
Our first day was spent driving up to Inverness and back (only stopped in the city for lunch). Stopped to visit Urquhart Castle, which sits right on the shore of Loch Ness and even visited the Loch Ness Monster Exhibition Centre in Drumnadrochit. Both were interesting and fun! I couldn’t resist buying myself a small stuffed Nessy toy. You just have to buy these things, right?
It was mostly just a driving holiday and we just didn’t stop. Pulling the car into little nooks so we could just climb out and wander around was the best kind of holiday to me. I’d take a fortnight doing that over a city break any day.
I’ve only ever felt the “I just want to be here” tug at my heart once before when I visited Prague. From the moment we drove past Glasgow I could feel my heart swelling like it did before, fit to burst with the feeling of being completely overwhelmed by a place. I already miss it so much I almost want to cry.
